Yesterday (Jan. 8) Jaurim opened the show NAGASU1, not with their performance but with their afterthoughts on the show – how much they were appreciative of the way the audience had embraced and received their music and how they had enjoyed each and every moment throughout the fourteen rounds of competitions. NAGASU is a survival show airing on MBC, where established, professional musicians perform in a competitive setting. And Jaurim survived all along, with fourteen great legendary renditions of great legendary Korean music – some are their own and some are others’, and graduated with honors a week ago yesterday. Well-deserved, they were simply awesome. And I was happy especially for Kim Yoonah (or Kim Yuna), lead vocalist and songwriter of the band, whose genius I feel incredibly fortunate to have witnessed anew every Sunday.
I’ve been such a loyal, faithful NAGASU fan. I just loved to watch the show in spite of all those controversies. But without Jaurim, an honor graduate, and my Bobby (Kim) who was eliminated a week ago yesterday, the show suddenly seemed completely insignificant and void. So I clicked off the video immediately after Park Wan Kyu’s performance since he was the reason I clicked on the show in the first place. That was my first time ever to do so ever since the show’s debut, and my killer instinct tells me that now is the show’s first “real” crisis.
....... Uh...... where was I? Okay, let me get back to Jaurim.
Although the movie Man with Flowers (1997) was a box office flop, that summer Jaurim had made a jump from the indie scene to the mainstream with their first single “Hey, Hey, Hey,” released from the soundtrack of the movie. They looked like an overnight sensation, but they’d actually been kicking around – Kim Jinman (bass) and Lee Sunkyu (lead guitar and vocalist) formed the indie band, the Choco2 Cream Rolls (CCR), in 1995, and Kim Yoonah and Goo Taehoon (drums and percussion) had encountered each other in the indie scene since 1993. In March of 1997, Kim Yoonah joined the CCR and they renamed the band the Ugly Ducks3 (UD), then Goo joined back up with Kim Yoonah in the UD. When asked to participate in the soundtrack of the upcoming movie, Man with Flowers, they ditched the name Ugly Ducks (which they thought was too amateurish) and renamed the band Jaurim (자우림 紫雨林, which means Purple Rain Forest).

In no time, Jaurim became the standard bearer of mid 90’s Korean modern rock, along with the Ju Ju Club (or Juju Club, 1996~2002). Both bands are among many artists influenced by the Cranberries, the Cardigans, and Alanis Morissette, especially by Dolores O’Riordan’s vocal styles (yodeling and keening). Jaurim received criticism, the moment they surged into the limelight, that they were just copycatting the Cranberries. However, they have come of age and evolved along their own lines way over a decade and proved themselves to be the cream of the crop. Over the past 15 years, the band has never taken a hiatus or experienced a change in orientation. They are the longest-running current band with all four original members surviving in Korean music history.
1. NAGASU is an acronym of Naneun Gasuda (나는 가수다) which means “I’m a singer.” 2. Choco is a Koreanized word of chocolate-covered. Choco Cream Rolls (CCR) was intentionally meant to be a cover band of Sanullim as both Kim Jinman and Lee Sunkyu are die-hard fans of the band. 3. The band name Ugly Ducks was chosen on a whim just because the members didn’t want to bother. |
